Kelpi wins L’Oréal’s global Beyond Plastic competition

L’Oréal’s Packaging Science Centre team hand Kelpi the Overall Winner’s award at the Beyond Plastic grand final in Paris

In November 2022, biomaterials innovator Kelpi entered the Beyond Plastic Challenge launched by L’Oréal within an open ecosystem. This competition was a unique opportunity for creative entrepreneurs to help nurture innovative solutions and concepts with first-class support, resources and experiences to push their business forward.

Kelpi was very proud to be selected, from more than 140 global applicants, as one of three finalists to present at a grand finale in Paris, where Kelpi was chosen as the overall winner.

The challenge was designed to support the ‘L’Oréal for the Future’ programme goal that: 100% of plastic materials for packaging will come from recycled or bio-based sources; and 100% of bio-based ingredients and packaging materials will be sustainably sourced by 2030.

“Kelpi is thrilled and excited to have been selected, from such a talented field, as the overall winner of the Beyond Plastic competition,” said Kelpi CEO and co-founder Neil Morris. “L’Oréal has been an inspiration to us from the moment we entered the competition and to now be working collaboratively with the world’s largest cosmetics company is a huge boost to our mission of eliminating plastic pollution and ending our dependence on fossil fuels to create single-use packaging.”

Kelpi’s world-leading materials team will now be working with L’Oréal to prototype and pilot bio-material solutions for plastic-free packaging.
